I awoke deep in the rainforest. It was dawn. My open-air bungalow faced the rushing river fifty yards away. It was my last morning on the island of Dominica (pronounced Dahm-in-EE-kuh). Still a little groggy, I shut my eyes and let my mind drift back to the last time I felt this whole—in the mountains of Bali. I wanted to tuck these memories in that same place.
I had immersed my senses in this place, and I hoped to remember everything: The way the fisherman proudly smiled as he displayed his morning catch. How his jaw shook uncontrollably with laughter as I shared with him the moving image I’d recorded. The burn of the potent ‘bush rum’ I’d been offered by locals. The smell of the pavement after a downpour. The way my hands grasped at the roots, and how I gripped the ropes during my rappels to the beach below. The way beads of sweat ran into my mouth as I drank freshly-cracked coconut. The smokey bonfire smell that lingered on my jacket for weeks because I wasn’t quite ready to wash away its memory.
When you meet a place so distinctly alive, you savor it deeply. Thank you, Dominica, for helping me discover my inner explorer.
Because The Nature Island has so many stories, we’ve created a film called Discover Dominica, an interactive journey where you will choose your own adventure. There will be a series of menus which pop up throughout the film. You will have a limited amount of time to click when prompted to choose your own experience. If you don’t choose, a random experience will be chosen for you. We hope you have as much fun exploring this film as we did creating it.
For the best user experience and resolution, view the film on your desktop or laptop. If you’re viewing on mobile devices, please download the free app when prompted.
