Behind the Design: Techo 3

CJ Whittaker, VP of Product Design, has had over 10 years of experience designing an array of outdoor gear. He explains the process of designing tents, “Fabric tension is the most important factor when designing a tent. So it’s a little more complex in a way. But I like that, if feels like sculpting, watching how the shape evolves through the development process.”

Introducing the Techo 3 tent, a tent designed for far-flung adventures and local backpacking trips alike.

The Techo 3 is a three-person tent that is designed for everything from multi-day treks to camping in the backyard. As a budding outdoor gear brand, it was only natural to introduce tents and camp gear to the product line. “Tents are natural extension when building an outdoor brand,” says CJ Whittaker, “Designing the first tent in the Cotopaxi line was an exciting process. We spent a lot of time researching and designing to make a functional and reliable tent.”

CJ Whittaker, VP of Product Design, has had over 10 years of experience designing an array of outdoor gear. Traditionally designing backpacks for Cotopaxi, he explains how the process when designing tents differs, “Fabric tension is the most important factor when designing a tent. Tension determines the form, function, and even durability. And tension is influenced by many other factors like pole flex, fabric, pattern shape, etc. So it’s a little more complex in a way. But I like that, if feels like sculpting, watching how the shape evolves through the development process.”

Additional features include an iPad holder. When researching the needs of present day campers, CJ learned that more and more people are getting outside with electronics. The iPad holder has a window that displays an iPad to look at pictures at the end of the day, or to enjoy a movie with the kids before falling asleep. “It’s a way to make camping approachable,” CJ says.

Stay tuned, the Techo 3 Tent is only the beginning of a line of tents and camping gear coming from Cotopaxi.
